Introducción: Foro sobre la economía social y solidaria en América Latina

Nota: En el 2020, el Miami Institute comenzó sus comunicaciones en inglés, pero parte de nuestra meta en el instituto es ser un centro de diálogo en los diversos idiomas de la mayoría global. Este foro sobre la economía social y solidaria en América Latina, que se llevará a cabo en español, es nuestro primer paso formal hacia esta meta. Este foro es una colaboración entre el Miami Institute, la Red Comparte y el Centro Internacional de Investigación de la Economía Social y Solidaria de la Universidad Iberoamericana CDMX (CIIESS). América Latina, cuna de grandes civilizaciones, ha sido subordinada por diversas potencias mundiales para la extracción de su riqueza en recursos naturales, espacio de mezcla y combate entre diversas culturas y la subsecuente lucha por su autonomía desde donde se han promovido diferentes experiencias económicas y políticas. Actualmente se caracteriza por ser una región de contrastes, con una profunda desigualdad social y económica en donde muchos de sus territorios sumergidos en situaciones de pobreza que generan condiciones para la grave crisis de seguridad, corrupción e impunidad que atraviesa. Por otro lado, es una región de abundancia, con una de las mayores biodiversidades del planeta y diversidad de culturas que la habitan, incluyendo a más de 520 pueblos indígenas originarios.

De estos contrastes en América Latina emergen varias tensiones ligadas al paradigma económico que domina la región: un modelo económico que excluye a quienes no tienen los medios para participar de forma “eficiente” en el mercado. Ante este modelo hegemónico occidental, existen diversas experiencias alternativas con largas historias en la región, que se han diseñado desde la base, desde las fronteras de la sociedad y que están orientadas al servicio de la vida de las personas que la habitan. Hoy en día, en esta región se está dando un debate que atañe al futuro de nuestra sociedad como planeta, en donde se explora la pertinencia de alterativas, como la economía social y solidaria, para promover formas de vida digna y en armonía con la Tierra. Esperamos que este diálogo impulsado por el Miami Institute for the Social Sciences, la Red Comparte y el Centro Internacional de Investigación de la Economía Social y Solidaria de la Universidad Iberoamericana CDMX (CIIESS) pueda contribuir a este debate desde las voces que están promoviendo estas experiencias.

Note: In 2020, the Miami Institute launched with communications in English, but part of our goal as an institute is to be a center of discussion in various languages of the Global Majority. This forum on social and solidarity economies in Latin America, which is taking place in Spanish, is our first formal step towards this goal. The forum is a collaboration between the Miami Institute, the Comparte network, and the Centro Internacional de Investigación en Economía Social y Solidaria at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City (CIIESS). Latin America has been the cradle of great civilizations, colonized and subordinated by various world powers for the extraction of its wealth in natural resources, a space of blending and contestation between different cultures and the subsequent struggle for their autonomy from where different economic and political experiences have been promoted. It is currently characterized by being a region of contrasts, with deep social and economic inequalities where many of its territories are submerged in poverty, creating conditions for the crises in security, corruption and impunity that these territories are experiencing. On the other hand, it is a region of abundance, with one of the greatest concentrations of biodiversity on the planet and its diversity of cultures that inhabit it, including more than 520 original indigenous peoples.

From these contrasts in Latin America emerge several tensions linked to the economic paradigm that dominates the region: an economic model that excludes those who don’t have the means to participate "efficiently" in the market. To face this Western hegemonic model, there are various alternative experiences with long histories in the region, designed from the base, from the borders of society and oriented to be of service to the life of the people who inhabit it. Today, in this region, there is a debate taking place regarding the future of our society as a planet, where the relevance of alternatives, such as the social and solidarity economy, is explored to promote forms of structuring our communities to further dignify life and harmony with the Earth. Hosted by the Miami Institute for the Social Sciences, the Comparte Network and the International Research Centre of Social and Solidarity Economy of the Universidad Iberoamericana CDMX (CIIESS), we hope that this dialogue—amplifying the voices that are promoting these experiences in Latin America—can contribute to this debate within and beyond the region.
